Whatever the time of year, whatever the weather, some places are so special they’re just asking you to spend time in them. Brooklands Cottage, Cheriton, (Ref: 471) is one such home from home.

Cheriton (originally from Cherry Town) is one of Gower’s smallest hamlets, situated on the northern side of the peninsula which remains a peaceful haven, blessed with landscapes and monuments that despite Gower’s AONB status remain well-kept secrets. So whether you’re a walker, a wild-life enthusiast, a lover of all things historical, or a foodie and real-ale quaffer, Brooklands is just a step away from it all.

• Stroll to the church of Saint Cadog (Sant Catwg) a Grade 1 listed building said to be Gower’s most beautiful mediaeval church. Mooch around the churchyard and find the headstone of Wales’ first great psychoanalyst, Ernest Jones, (friend of Sigmund Freud).
• Pick up the footpath at the stone stile opposite the church and follow the track along the whole of the Cheriton Valley, following the Burry Pill Stream passing the remains of ancient and sunken roads.
• Walk to Weobley Castle, a fourteenth-century fortified manor, owned by CADW, with stunning views across the estuary of North Gower (and adjacent to farm shop selling the famous Gower Salt Marsh Lamb!).
• Trek across the pristine sand of Whiteford Spit to view Whiteford Lighthouse, the last remaining wave-washed cast-iron lighthouse in Great Britain – a superb example of Victorian architecture.
• Be amazed by the salty mudflats and tidal ditches of the northern shore which make a unique habitat for plants and birds and a rich grazing ground for Gower’s salt marsh lambs which feed on the beautiful samphire, sorrel, sea lavender and thrift that grow there.
• Grab your binoculars and step inside one of the two bird hides on either side of the marsh. Spot the otters, kingfishers and wading birds.
• Explore the neighbouring hamlet of Cwm Ivy and walk through the woods, collecting fir cones as you go, until you come to the vast expanse of dunes and white, unspoiled, unpeopled sands on the other side – a National Nature Reserve owned by the National Trust.
• Saunter along the road to the next village of Llanmadoc (1km) and take a pit stop of the eighteenth-century gastro-pub ‘The Britannia Inn’ which was recently voted the best pub in West Glamorgan.
• Don’t miss out on a coffee, home-made cake, locally sourced produce and a chat with the locals at Llanmadoc’s ‘Siop y Bobl’ a unique community-owned and community-run enterprise at the heart of Llanmadoc
